I’m a woman of many interests, so each week I tell you about three things that I have been really into lately.
3. The Jungle
Have you ever read The Jungle? I’ve always heard about it, and knew that the book played a key role in creating the FDA - Thanks Upton. Although knowing this I sort of always assumed that it was a dry, serious look at the meat packing industry. So imagine my surprise when I actually began to read it and I found out that yes, the conditions described in the factories is disgusting, but the story is really about the hard life immigrants to the United States faced in the early 20th century. Sinclair famously said, "I aimed at the public's hear, and by accident I hit the stomach." I can see how if I were eating meat during those times how my stomach would be affected first. But right now this book is hitting me right in the heart.
I cannot believe I discovered this dish a week before I left Lebanon. It is a country version of hummus, warm chickpeas mashed by hand with cumin, turmeric, and fresh herbs. You can bet that I’ll be experimenting with how to recreate this savory yet tangy delight when I’m back stateside.
1. The Beach in Tyr, Lebanon
I visited this beach for the last time (on this trip - not forever!) this Thursday. What can I say? Clear water, sand, and free. It’s the Mediterranean at its best!
